SRI LANKA
SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is located just off the southern coast of India. It is known for its rich history, diverse cultures and religions (for some, surfing falls in the latter category as well). Crossing through Sri Lanka you will find sandy beaches, lush tea plantations and hilly rainforests.
The country has a population of around 21 million people, with Colombo as its capital and largest city. The nation boasts a rich cultural heritage, influenced by centuries of Buddhist, Hindu, and colonial suppression. Sri Lanka gained independence from British rule in 1948 and is a democratic socialist republic.
EXPLORING SRI LANKA
Thanks to Katharina’s former boss, who is a homeowner in Sri Lanka, we had a pretty good idea about the route.
We would start with the cultural triangle, a concentration of ancient heritage sites in the center of the island. From there we were going to travel south, trying to conquer Adam’s Peak, a popular pilgrimage site. Afterwards we were planning to join the touristy crowds in the famous town of Ella, followed by some time off in the remote national park of Gal Oya in the east of Sri Lanka.
Finally: the beaches in the south and southwest, to be explored by scooter! And maybe we would be able to squeeze in a scuba dive!
